Civil Engineering Department

Department of Civil Engineering has been established since the inception of institute in 1985. It has been accredited twice by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) AICTE, New Delhi and recognized by Institution of Engineers. The Department has grown tremendously over the years and has developed strong links with the building, construction industry and academic and research. Besides high-quality teaching at UG and PG level, the department is actively involved in basic and applied research and consultancy. It also provides high quality technical advisory support to various organizations. The Department of Civil Engineering with its multifaceted faculty continues to maintain and cultivate its strong links with the infrastructural industry, academic and research institutions at the National level.

Programmes Offered

B.Tech in Civil Engineering

Department offers an undergraduate B.Tech. degree programme in since 1986 with sanctioned intake of 60 students. Civil Engineering deals with the analysis, design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including public works such as roads, bridges, canals, dams, airports, sewerage systems, pipelines, structural components of buildings, and railways. Civil Engineering is traditionally divided into several sub-disciplines such as Environmental Engineering. Transportation Engineering. Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering. etc. Civil Engineering involves in the public sector Municipal to Central Governments and in the private sector from individual house-owners to international companies. The students who have been completed their graduation are working in India and abroad in various government and private sector as well as many have developed their own business.

M. Tech.in Structural Engineering

Department offers a post graduate programme in Structural Engineering since 2013 with an intake of 18 students. With a focus on quality education students are trained with advanced structural analysis and design using traditional analytical method and finite element technique. Study also focuses on investigating new engineering materials and their testing Our trained graduates are working in various profiles in reputed organizations, public and private sector, research and training. Some of them have set their entrepreneurial venture.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

Department offers a Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D. ) program since 2016 with an intake of 10 students. Institute laboratories and infrastructure facilitates researchers to conduct experimentations in concrete and material testing, fluid mechanics and hydraulics, water quality assessment, structural vibrations and allied areas.

Departmental Library

Departmental library consists of 150 titles with 206 books, 57 journals, 19 proceedings of conferences/ workshop and 19 handbooks for the ready reference of students. It also contains various IS Codes, journals and periodicals. VCDs on material and soil testing are also available, the project reports and case study reports of previous year students are also available in the departmental library.

Testing Facilities

  • Testing of Cement and Concrete samples:

    Department is having concrete technology laboratory with modern age instruments. Also department is having digital compression testing machine. During the year 2024-25, the laboratory generated Rs: 15000/- of revenue in terms of testing and consultancy services provided to the construction industry.

  • Testing of Building and Road Materials:

    With the laboratory equipment available in the transportation engineering laboratory, testing of building and road materials is carried out. The laboratory is equipped with impact testing machine, hardness testing machine for aggregate. Also equipment for testing bitumen properties are available. The laboratory is also generating considerable revenue.

Consultancy Services

Structural Design and Drawing of Buildings

    Department is having licensed version of software like Autocad, SAP 2000 and others and providing service in the area of planning and design of residential and public buildings. Also, department is providing consultancy services in the area of

  • Research Funding Project titled "Spatial distribution of uranium and associated water quality parameters in six districts of Maharashtra (Bhandara, Gondia, Gadchiroli, Nagpur, Chandrapur and Wardha) funded by Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences, Department of Atomic Energy, BARC, Mumbai of Rs 43.59 Lakhs.
  • Department of Civil Engineering has worked as Technical Service providers for Jalswarajya Project (Water Supply and Sanitation Project) of Govt. of Maharashtra by Zillah Parishad Nagpur.
  • GIS for Watershed Management of worth 5.28 lakhs and funded by DST, New Delhi.
  • Preparation of Action Plan for Watershed Management using GIS and Remote Sensing of worth 12.85 lakhs funded by AICTE, New Delhi.
  • Roof Top Rainwater Harvesting Scheme at K.I.T.S., Ramtek of worth Rs. 1.42 lakhs funded by Central Ground Water Board, Nagpur.

Approved Research Center

The Department has been recognized as a place of Research by RTM Nagpur, University from the session 2016-17. The number of research scholars can be enrolled to maximum 10. There are Two Ph.D. supervisors recognized by RTM Nagpur, University. Some research scholars are enrolled for Ph.D. in the research center.

Conferences / Seminars

Various Workshops / STTP / FDP are organized in the department under National Mission and Education through ICT which are funded by Ministry of Human Resource Development and Sponsored by IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur. The Department has organized a National Seminar on 'Innovative Technologies in Construction of Concrete Structures' (InTech Concrete-2003) during 7-8 Feb. 2003 and National Conference on Recent Trends & Challenges in Civil Engg (RTCCE -09) in 2009.


The Seminar and Conference were intended to be a common platform to bring together Engineers, Researchers, Architects, Builders and Managers to assess the emerging trends in Civil Engineering Constructions. More than 150 delegates participated from all over India. About 50 technical papers were presented. The faculty also involved in organizing many other seminars and conferences at the National and International level.

Learning Beyond Curriculum:

For overall personality development students are motivated to participate in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The institute is having various associations, forums and clubs at institute and departmental level.

Civil Engineering Association (CEA)

The CEA was formed with the primary purpose of exposing our students for their Personality Development. The association promotes the talent of students in extra and co- curricular activities. With both students and faculty as its members the association is most active in the Institution.


CEA is responsible for conducting a lecture series, dispensed by distinguished academicians and practitioners of the trade, in order to educate our students. It conducts the seminars, debate, quizzes, personality contests to improve the subject knowledge and organization skills among the students.

The Civil Engineering Association has been associated in conducting the workshops and seminars at the National level and inter-branch competitions at the Institution level. CEA has actively involved in conducting the National level students Festival Teknodeon which is conducted in alternative years. The Festival is envisaged as a show-case for all the technical and creative talents of students from all over India. Competitions are held on technical paper presentation in all branches of Engineering, website designing, product designing and programming contests along with other extra-curricular activities such as quizzes, debates, games, sports and cultural events.


National level student Fest-STAMBH-15 has been organised during 15-16 Sep. 2015.

National Student Technical Conference (NSTC)-2019 has been organised on 7th Sep 2019, in which 100 technical papers have been presented by engineering branches.

Student Achievements

Placement: All eligible students got placement in various reputed companies through campus selection. In the present academic year so far 25% of the final year students have been placed.
Higher Studies: Department always encourage the students to appear for the competitive examinations like GATE, MPSE, UPSE and pursue the higher studies. During the last academic year 7 students have joined in M. Tech.Programme at various Institutes and 5 students taken the admission in NICMAR Pune /Hyderabad.
University Ranks: In every university examination the students have been achieving university ranks.

Summer Training

Students are sent for summer training at the end of IV and VI semester for three to four weeks, during the summer vacation. The training work carried out by the students is assessed by the Expert Committee by conducting the presentation of individual students.

Distinctions of Faculty

  • Dr. B.R. Rathan Lal, Dr. S.L.Atmapoojya, Dr. R.K. Bopche, Dr. A.N. Shrikhande, Dr. A. N.Dabhade and Dr. Meenakshi Chauragadehave been awarded Ph.D. degrees during their services in the Institution.
  • Dr. A.N. Shrikhande has won the Best Paper Award for his paper in a state level seminar held at Umrer in 2004, Best Singer Award in Marathi song competition for all University Teachers in 2007 and 2011. He is honored with Dr. Ambedkar Fellowship Award by Dalit Sahitya Academy, New Delhi in 2007.
  • Dr. A.N. Dabhade has won the best young teacher award by KITS Ramtek in 2006.
  • Dr. R.K. Bopche has been included in the recent 'Database of Environmental Expert 2007 in India' published by Ministry of Environmental and Forest, Govt. of India.
  • Mr. R.K. Parve, Mr.P.D. Ramteke and Mr. S.V.Rayadu are pursuing Ph.D. at present from RTM Nagpur University
  • Lt.Rajat Yadav became a Lieutenant in National Cadets Corps (Army) at KITS, Ramtek.
