LABORATORIES
The Department has well equipped laboratories, workshop bays and state-of-the-art CAD/CAM center as detailed below.

1. Machine Shop: The shop has well-maintained production type machine tools such as capstan (turret lathe) and all general head stock lathe machines. Other machines include shaper, double housing planer, radial drilling machine, planer machine, milling machine along with dividing heads and grinding machines. It is used by all the students. The final year students used it for fabrication projects & fourth semester students for fabricating mini projects. Exposure to various operations on lathe, shaper, planer, milling & drilling machines is given.

2. Workshop: The Workshop complex has carpentry, fitting, smithy, foundry and welding shops with proper ventilation and illumination. Each shop is provided with proper workbenches with all the required tools. Modern equipments have been added to each shop, particularly the foundry shop. Foundry shop is facilitated with various types of sand testing equipments. This shop also facilitates casting of aluminium items, spot welding of items etc. First year students of all branches including B. Architecture are trained here to learn basic workshop practices.

3. Theory of Machines Lab: This laboratory has a good set-up for demonstrating various aspects of both kinematics and dynamics of mechanism and machines. Experiments on ‘Cam Mechanism’ ‘Whirling of Shafts’, ‘Gyroscope’, ‘Balancing of Reciprocating Masses’ etc. can be performed here. Excellent models for kinematics of machines are available for demonstration. Some models made by the staff and students are part of the Theory of Machines Laboratory.

4. Heat Transfer Lab: Almost all the experimental units on conduction, convection and radiation are available for study of students. The lab has ‘The Drop-Wise and Film-Wise Condensation’, Vertical Condenser, ‘Heat Transfer through Agitated Stirrer’, 'Heat pipe demonstration' .

5. Mechanical Measurements and Metrology Lab: The lab facilitates for measurement of important parameters such as temperature, pressure, strain, torque, linear and angular displacements etc. Strain measurements through strain gauges are also done apart from other routine measurements. Transducers for sensing temperatures, pressure and speed are available. Device to measure force, sound level has been added. In Metrological section measuring instruments like ‘Vernier gauges’ along with surface plates, optical flats, profile projector, comparators etc. are available.

6. Metallurgy Lab: It has models of microscopes, specimen-making machines and all needed instruments to study microstructure under various changes due to loading and also heat treatment. Recent additions are the equipments for hardness testing and software based microstructure study. It consist of latest ‘Image Analysis System’ which helps in complete microstructural analysis like grain size, phase determination ,module count estimation of metal alloys.

7. Energy Conversion Lab: It comprises of two different laboratories viz. Internal combustion engines and Energy conversion. This lab have heat engines, compressor, models of boilers, steam engines, rotary engines, multistage turbines, two-stroke and four-stroke engines used in vehicles. This has been modernized with the addition of a computerized I.C. engine test rig.

8. Mechatronics Lab: Mechatronics lab is a newly developed lab in the MED. Lab is equipped with advance instruments including a ‘HMI interfaced PLC trainer kit’, ‘High End Oscilloscope’, ‘Digital Trainer Kit’ etc. This research oriented lab have paved way for various innovative projects in the department, namely ‘Automatic Drilling Machine, Robotic Arm, Coin Sorting Machine’, ‘E-Bike’ ‘Automatic Tap’, ‘Auto Lights’ etc.

9. CAD/CAM Lab: CAD/CAM Lab is equipped with a good and latest collection of systems and assorted software like ‘Creo’(Pro-E), ‘IDEAS’, ‘Autocad’, ‘NISA’ (Numerical Integrated Software for Analysis) and ‘Virtual Engineering’ to provide hands on training to the students. A CNC milling machine with automatic tool changer, CNC lathe machine and Robotic manipulator are also available to demonstrate concept of ‘Computer Aided Manufacturing’. Recently a ‘Modular Automated Production System (MAPS)’ has been installed in the lab which includes SCARA robot and weighing & palletizing module. This system demonstrates the latest automation practices used in the industries. The project has been funded by AICTE, New Delhi under MODROBS scheme.

10. Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Lab: This lab have ‘Vapour Compression Refrigeration Cycle Test rig’ ,’Mini Air Conditioning Test Rig’, and ‘Water Chilling Plant’.

11. Research and Development Lab: This laboratory has set up of ‘Variable Compression Ratio Test Rig’ for petrol engines to carry investigation of different alternative fuels. The laboratory is also equipped with, ‘Exhaust Gas Analyzer’ to test emission levels and facility to determine calorific value of volatile fuels. Additional accessories are attached to the engine to change gas mode like LPG and CNG. Experimental set ups of student projects are also preserved in this lab.

PROJECT WORK
Final year students, normally in a group of five , are assigned project work under the guidance of one faculty member. This works are done in the fields of solar energy, bio-gas, cryogenics, computerized solutions of mechanisms, Robotics etc. These projects involve both investigation, analysis and design with fabrication of designed components. Now, as per the revised syllabus ‘Mini projects’ are also fabricated at second year level.
